Crew tips

Keep the crew happy

  • 1Rotate shotgun at every major stop.
  • 2Big Sur has no signal: download maps first.
  • 3Run one shared snack and gas fund instead of 50 payment requests.
  • 4Check Highway 1 road status before you go.

There’s something about Highway 1 that just feels right. Maybe it’s the salt air hitting you as you cross into Monterey, or the fact that every single turn reveals a view that looks like it belongs on a postcard.

But let’s be honest: the success of a PCH road trip isn't about the scenery—it’s about the playlist-fueled arguments over who gets to pick the next song and who's stuck in the middle seat for the Big Sur stretch.

1. Santa Cruz (The Wake-Up Call)

Most people head straight for the Boardwalk. It’s iconic, but it’s loud, crowded, and expensive. If your crew wants a more "human" start, head to Steamer Lane.

Vibe Check: Grab a coffee from a local spot, sit on the cliff, and watch the surfers. It’s the perfect place to get the group into "vacation mode" before the 5-hour driving blocks begin.

2. Carmel Beach (The Sunset Ritual)

Carmel-by-the-Sea is beautiful, but it can feel a bit... fancy. The real pro-move for a group? Carmel Beach at sunset.

Crew Logistics: Unlike many CA beaches, you’re often allowed to have small fires here (check the signage!). There is nothing quite like roasting s'mores with your best friends while the sun disappears. Pro Tip: One car should head to the grocery store for wood and snacks while the other car snags a spot on the sand.

3. Big Sur & The Bixby Bridge

You’re going to stop at Bixby Bridge. You have to. It’s the law. But don't expect a quiet moment—expect a line of influencers. Get the shot, then keep heading south to Point Lobos.

Vibe Check: Point Lobos is where the locals go. It has turquoise coves and sea otters. It’s a great way to stretch your legs and get away from the road noise.

Crew budget calculator

What will this trip cost your crew?

Per person
$420–$780
Whole crew
$2,520–$4,680

Estimate only, based on $140–$260 per person per day for food, local transport, activities and a shared stay. Flights not included; real prices vary by season.

4. Lunch at Nepenthe

Yes, it’s famous. Yes, there might be a wait. But sitting on that terrace with an "Ambrosia Burger" while looking out over 40 miles of coastline is a core memory in the making.

Crew Logistics: They have big communal-style tables. If you’re a group of 6+, expect a wait, but use that time to browse the gift shop or just sit on the stairs and soak up the sun. It’s worth every minute.

5. McWay Falls (The Quick Win)

Located in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, this is the 80-foot waterfall that drops directly onto a beach. You can’t actually go down to the beach, which is why it stays so pristine.

Crew Strategy: This is a "driver’s break" stop. It’s a 5-minute walk from the parking lot. It’s a high-impact view for very little effort—perfect for keeping the morale high when the crew is starting to get "car-tired."

Road Trip Survival Rules:

  • 1. The "Shotgun" Rotation: Change seats at every major stop. Nobody should be stuck in the back for the whole 600 miles.
  • 2. Download the Offline Maps: Big Sur has ZERO cell service. If you haven't downloaded your maps, you're going to miss your turn-off.
  • 3. The Snack Fund: Have one person in the crew manage a "common pool" for gas and snacks to avoid 50 Venmo requests at the end of the day.

    Group trip FAQ

Planning Pacific Coast Highway with friends

How much does a PCH road trip cost per person with friends?

Expect roughly 140 to 260 USD per person per day, covering a shared rental, gas, lodging and food. Big Sur lodging is the priciest part, and campsites are the main way to bring that down.

What car does a group need for the Pacific Coast Highway?

A mid-size SUV fits four friends with bags, and six people need a minivan or two cars. If you drive one way, check the rental company drop-off fee, which can be significant.

How should friends split costs on a PCH road trip?

Run one shared fund for gas, snacks and parking instead of dozens of small payment requests, and log the car and lodging in one place. Settle up once at the end of the trip.

Is Highway 1 through Big Sur open?

Sections of Highway 1 in Big Sur have closed for long stretches after landslides, so check the Caltrans QuickMap or road status page before you go. Download offline maps too, since much of Big Sur has no cell signal.

What should a group book ahead on the PCH?

Big Sur lodging and campsites book out months ahead in summer, so lock them in first. Point Lobos parking fills early on weekends, so arrive in the morning.
