Crew tips

Keep the crew happy

  • 1Book south coast stays early: they fill fast in peak season.
  • 2Rent an SUV and rotate drivers to avoid fatigue.
  • 3Layers, always: the weather flips fast.
  • 4Download offline maps; service is patchy.
  • 5Hit the big stops early or late to beat the crowds.

Iceland's south coast is a land of fire and ice, where cascading waterfalls meet volcanic black sand beaches, and massive glaciers carve their way through the landscape. It's a truly awe-inspiring destination, and even better when experienced with your closest friends. This itinerary is designed for a group road trip, balancing iconic sights with opportunities for adventure and shared experiences.

Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavik & Golden Circle Warm-Up

Touchdown at Keflavík International Airport (KEF). Grab your rental vehicles – SUVs are highly recommended, especially if you're venturing off the main Ring Road. Head to Reykjavik, Iceland's vibrant capital, to settle into your accommodation.

After a quick refresh, embark on a mini-Golden Circle tour. While technically not on the south coast, it's a fantastic introduction to Iceland's geological wonders and easily accessible from Reykjavik. Visit Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Next, witness the explosive power of the Strokkur geyser at Geysir Geothermal Area, erupting every few minutes. Finally, marvel at the majestic Gullfoss waterfall, cascading down two tiers into a rugged canyon.

Enjoy a group dinner at one of Reykjavik's many fantastic restaurants. From traditional Icelandic cuisine to international flavors, there's something for everyone. Don't forget to try the local beer!

Day 2: Waterfalls & Coastal Charms

Today, the south coast adventure truly begins! Set off east along the Ring Road (Route 1).

First stop: Seljalandsfoss waterfall. This unique waterfall allows you to walk behind the cascading water, offering an incredible perspective (be prepared to get wet!). A short walk away is Gljúfrabúi, a hidden waterfall tucked away inside a gorge. It requires a bit of scrambling, but the reward is well worth it.

Next, visit Skógafoss waterfall. This powerful waterfall boasts a 60-meter drop and is often graced with a rainbow on sunny days. Climb the stairs beside the waterfall for stunning panoramic views.

Continue to the charming coastal village of Vík í Mýrdal. This picturesque town is known for its black sand beach, Reynisfjara, with its iconic basalt columns and towering sea stacks. Be mindful of the strong waves – sneaker waves are common here.

Check into your accommodation in or near Vík. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and perhaps catch the Northern Lights if conditions are favorable.

Day 3: Glacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach

Today is all about glaciers! Continue east along the Ring Road to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. This stunning lagoon is filled with icebergs of all shapes and sizes, calving from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Take a boat tour to get up close to the icebergs and maybe even spot some seals.

Across the road from the lagoon is Diamond Beach, where icebergs wash ashore, creating a surreal landscape of glittering ice on black sand. Spend some time exploring the beach and capturing unforgettable photos.

For the adventurous crew, consider a glacier hike or ice climbing tour on Sólheimajökull glacier. Several tour operators offer guided excursions suitable for all skill levels.

Stay overnight in the Höfn area, known for its delicious langoustine.

Day 4: Return Journey & Relaxation

Begin your return journey west. Break up the drive with stops at places you might have missed on the way east.

Consider a visit to the Sólheimasandur plane wreck. This abandoned US Navy plane on a black sand beach makes for a unique and photogenic stop. It's a 4km walk each way, so allow plenty of time.

Alternatively, treat yourselves to a relaxing soak at the Secret Lagoon, a natural hot spring near Flúðir. It's a more intimate and less crowded alternative to the Blue Lagoon.

Return to Reykjavik for your final night in Iceland. Celebrate your adventure with a farewell dinner and reminisce about your favorite moments.

Day 5: Departure

Enjoy a final Icelandic breakfast before heading to Keflavík International Airport for your departure. Reflect on the incredible memories you've made with your crew on this unforgettable south coast road trip.

    Group trip FAQ

    Planning South Coast with friends

How much does an Iceland South Coast road trip cost per person for a group?

Plan on roughly 200 to 350 USD per person per day, covering a shared rental car, fuel, guesthouses and food. Iceland is expensive, so cooking some meals from supermarket groceries makes a big difference for a group.

What car does a group need for the South Coast?

A mid-size SUV fits four people with luggage, while five or more usually need a large SUV or a van. In summer the Ring Road along the South Coast is paved and a 2WD car is fine, but rental 2WD cars are not allowed on the F-roads into the highlands.

How should a group split costs on an Iceland road trip?

Run one shared fund for fuel, groceries and parking, and log the car and accommodation in one place to settle up at the end. Icelandic fuel pumps generally need a card with a PIN, so make sure the person paying has one.

What should a group book ahead for Iceland?

Book South Coast accommodation as early as possible, since places near Vík and Jökulsárlón fill fast in peak season. Glacier hikes and ice cave visits are guided only, so reserve those once dates are set.

How far is Jökulsárlón from Reykjavík?

About 370 km, or roughly five hours of driving each way without stops. That is why this route stays overnight on the South Coast instead of doing it as a day trip.
